Product brief

What is a product brief?

A product brief, also known as a product specification or a product requirements document (PRD), is used by product managers (PMs) to put the thinking about a feature in writing.

It is written out as a first proper draft in the Definition step of the product management process, but the document is typically created already in Ideation or during Discovery then continues to live on as a collaborative document across the Refinement, Development, and Evaluation steps.

The document should ideally not only contain the product requirements but also wider information, context, goals, and decisions surrounding those requirements. Ideally, the product brief can serve as the single source of truth for the feature it describes. By working with a tool made for the task, such as Delibr, this becomes much easier.
